Thea Campbell, MBA, RHIA, is executive director, health information, at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, CA. She is an innovative servant leader committed to achieving top performance by leveraging a compelling vision of efficiency, growth, and diversity. Campbell has worked with multiple consulting firms that specialize in healthcare revenue cycle improvement and information management. Her experience in all sizes and types of organizations has included consulting, workflow efficiency and redesign, outsourcing, and the leadership of departments. Campbell is viewed as an expert in implementing and optimizing electronic health records, code sets, regulatory compliance, and computer-assisted coding. For 15 years, she has served as the senior director of a 200-plus person HIM department with an annual budget of $35 million. She is an active member of AHIMA and is a frequent speaker on the local and national level.

I have focused my energy on the strategic vision of health information at Cedars Sinai for 15-plus years. I lead an amazing team working to expand and enhance the services provided to our organization and community. We strive to exceed our customers’ high expectations for information accuracy, availability, and privacy. My time at this transformational organization has allowed me to develop the leadership skills that I feel are needed to support AHIMA’s mission as a Board Director.


I am a passionate believer in life-long learning and servant leadership. As a result, I am a regular internship site sponsor for HIM students. I believe these attributes translate well to support AHIMA in the expansion of its impact and influence on our varied and expanding communities. Also, in this time of unrest and societal discomfort, I have worked and continue to work on my own awareness and acceptance of others’ points of view, truly embracing diversity as a strength.

During COVID, I have worked to develop the diversity of my team’s leadership skills, as well as my own. We have expanded our already successful departmental work-from-home initiatives to support Cedars’ company-wide responsive remote work strategy, both short- and long-term. I have led my team to expand their skills toolbox to include virtual communication and connection methods, resiliency, and self-care awareness. I have the fortune of these experiences and am prepared to share them with a larger community. I believe these enhanced resilience capabilities will be vital for many in our profession as the organizations we serve blaze a trail forward out of the pandemic.

The industry’s focus has intensified on the need to rapidly gather healthcare data and translate it into meaningful interventions to save lives. It’s an amazing testimony to the need for our profession and will serve as a springboard furthering AHIMA’s mission and relevance. I’m humbled to be part of a great organization’s herculean efforts to answer the call to solve this healthcare crisis.
